A Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) is a treatment for hair loss involving the surgical removal of a strip from a donor area on the back of the patient’s head for use in the hair transplant procedure. The strip is dissected and prepared as individual grafts that will then be surgically implanted into recipient sites according to the individual needs of each patient. This treatment for hair loss is also commonly known as the strip technique, a reference to the manner in which the donor hair is taken from the patient.
MAXiM Hair Transplant FAQ
Surgical hair restoration through the use of FUT is advantageous for patients who wish to cover a greater area of hair loss, as this procedure enables the surgeon to transplant a significant number of hair follicles in a single session. The FUT procedure will leave a scar where the incision was made at the donor area, but this incision is made in such a way that it is covered by existing hair and therefore remains unseen following this treatment for hair loss.
The number of grafts that can be transplanted during a single FUT session will vary depending on the patient, but each session typically involves a range from 600 grafts up to 3,000 grafts. The number of follicles per graft also varies, but it is usually between one and three follicles per graft. The number of grafts and the number of sessions necessary is something that should be discussed during the consultation, as the needs of each patient are unique and there are many factors to take into consideration during this treatment for hair loss.
Doctors can transplant between 600 and 3,000 grafts in a single session of Follicular Unit Extraction, and multiple sessions can take place on subsequent days. This process involves the individual extraction of follicles, so each graft will contain a single hair follicle.
A Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) involves the individual removal of follicles for use in the hair transplant procedure. Since the follicles are removed individually, there is no horizontal scar at the donor site as with a Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), but not as many grafts can be implanted during a single session. It is for this reason that this treatment for hair loss is relatively time-intensive.
It is possible, however, to have multiple sessions conducted on subsequent days due to the quicker recovery process. The postoperative timeline is similar to a Follicular Unit Transplant, as patients can expect the transplanted hair to fall out after a few weeks and begin to re-grow after about four months.
As with a Follicular Unit Transplant, the results should be apparent after about six months.
A robotic hair transplant is a procedure that is designed to reduce the amount of time of the procedure for the patient while also limiting the amount of time each graft spends outside of the body. A robotic hair transplant therefore includes advanced technology that reduces the amount of time necessary for healing while making the implantation process simpler.
While the idea of a robotic hair transplant holds a great deal of promise, it is still more advantageous to have a skilled doctor manually transplant hair from the donor area to the recipient site. The best way to ensure this is to utilize the assistance of a hair transplant surgeon who has a great deal of experience with regard to successful surgical hair restoration and hair loss treatment.
The use of stem cells in the hair transplantation process is still a relatively new development, and there are doctors who have combined the use of stem cell injections with Hair Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) with the goal of stimulating additional hair growth following a traditional hair transplant.
In theory, the use of stem cells should stimulate the regenerative process for hair growth and could contribute to improving or maintaining the quality of the grafts, but testing is still being done to determine the usefulness of this process as it relates to surgical hair restoration. Stem cells treatments are only approved in certain countries.
Please check with your MAXiM location if stem cell hair restoration is offered at the center.

In addition to PRP, there are a number of medications and products that can be useful in preventing any further loss of naturally growing hair following a hair transplant.
