Stem cell injections have been utilized historically for several years for a variety of applications including, but not limited to, wound healing, nerve regeneration and repair, cardiac tissue repair, orthopedic tissue repair and other areas.
Adult fat is rich in stem cells which are self-generating cells that respond to growth factors and other stimulations to help wound healing and tissue repair.
In the stem hair cell therapy process, a small amount of fat is taken from the waist area and processed to separate the stem cells from the fat. An activation solution is added to these cells and then washed off so that only the cells remain. This is then injected in the thinning and balding areas. While results are unclear to mixed and clinical outcome data is scant, some physicians have combined this technique with a hair transplant to reduce the amount of donor tissue required and hopefully achieve follicular multiplication.
With regards to hair transplants, the concept with stem cell therapy is to multiply tissue, thus necessitating a smaller donor area, a smaller wound and scar on the back of the head, and no limitations with session size. If stem cell therapy works and the tissue successfully multiplies, one could have multiple sessions with limited donor tissue and minimal scarring and discomfort on the back and sides of the head.
In hair transplantation, some physicians combine Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy with stem cell injections to stimulate hair re-growth in the recipient sites of the scalp.
This therapy also strives for the quality and survival of the transplanted grafts.
Stem cell therapy for hair transplants is in its early stages of development and the results are mixed. Presently, some MAXiM Hair Transplant Physicians offer PRP treatment but not a combination of stem cell and PRP.
