Reasons of Hair Loss

hair loss - MAXiM Hair Restoration
Hair loss is among the most commonly occurring conditions both among men and women. Roughly 30% of the adult population suffers from some degree of hair loss and the occurrence is higher among men. By the age of 65, nearly two-thirds of men suffer from hair loss.

The vast majority of hair loss in men can be attributed to genetic factors and hereditary reasons.

The most common form of hair loss among men is referred to as androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness. Hair loss could be inherited from either the mother’s or father’s side.

There may be other secondary reasons for hair loss including, but not limited to, stress, disease, medication, hormones, burns and injuries, cosmetic procedures, adverse reactions, and other factors.

In male pattern baldness, the hair follicles become sensitive to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that produces testosterone, resulting in the falling out of hair follicles.

The frontal hairline and crown areas are most sensitive to DHT, resulting in a horse-shoe shaped pattern of hair loss in many cases.

The hair on the sides and back of the head is generally not sensitive to DHT which is evident amongst men with male pattern baldness. This forms the basis of the hair transplant which involves taking this non-DHT sensitive hair and transplanting it to the thinning and balding areas at the front and crown of the head.

Scientific evidence shows that if DHT is blocked or suppressed, this can save the hair follicle. As a result, hair loss can be controlled or prevented. In most cases, by the time such intervention occurs, hair loss has already occurred. Furthermore, some of the stronger drugs available in the market that can suppress DHT tend to have sexual or other side effects.
