What is Hair Implants?

Hair implants are a surgical solution to baldness that results in your own healthy hair growing where there had been significant hair loss or baldness. They are the only permanent, lasting, natural-looking baldness solution that uses your own growing hair. The term hair implant is generally interchangeable with the hair transplant. The implant refers to the hair that is taken from the donor area and implanted in the recipient site.

There are two main types of hair transplants: follicular unit transplants (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). In both procedures, the patient relaxes under local anesthesia while hair is surgically removed from the donor site. The donor site is usually the area of thickly growing hair around the back and sides of your head. This hair is resistant to DHT sensitivity, which is the reason behind male pattern baldness.

FUT is also called strip transplantation because the surgeon removes a strip of hair from the donor area. It does leave a scar, but it is not noticeable in daily life as the hair around the donor area covers it. The hair in the strip is dissected into small groups of follicles that are then surgically implanted in the hairline and bald areas of the scalp or another area where you want to grow hair.

FUE is the most advanced and aesthetically desirable hair implant technique. Individual grafts are removed from the donor site in a manner that leaves very tiny circular dots. Although it is more expensive than FUT, there is less pain and minimal scarring.

What can you expect from hair implants?

After your hair transplant surgery, you can expect the newly implanted hair will fall out several weeks later. Then, within 3-4 months, the hair will begin to regrow. Within 9 – 12 months, your hair should be fully grown in.

Are you a candidate for hair implants?

Men with androgenic alopecia, otherwise known as pattern baldness, are excellent candidates for hair implants. In men, this type of male pattern baldness occurs initially at the hairline, with the result eventually being that hair grows in a “U” shape around the back of the head. This hereditary condition is the most common reason people lose hair. Speak with one of our hair implant specialists to find out if hair implants are right for you.
