WHAT IS A HYBRID HAIR TRANSPLANT?

If you can’t find a hair loss treatment that offers everything you want, you might be a candidate for a hybrid hair procedure. These procedures combine different treatment methods to give patients a personalized solution that blends various benefits. In this helpful guide, we discuss some common hybrid hair procedures and explain how they work.

Combining FUE With FUT

You might’ve heard of follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT). They’re two of the most popular methods of hair restoration. You can combine these methods to maximize your results in one sitting. Both these methods can be time-consuming, but a hybrid treatment allows your surgeon to meet your intended result with minimal return visits. Here’s how it works.

Follicular unit transplantation, also known as the strip method, is a hair restoration surgery that’s been popular for years. They call it the strip method because the doctor takes a strip of hair from the back of your head, extracts hair grafts from it, and places those grafts in your balding areas. Basically, we take your hair and spread the wealth. This method used to be known as “plugs”, but with advanced technology, FUT procedures give patients a much thicker, more natural look than traditional “plugs”.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is similar to FUT, except the surgeon removes each follicular unit individually, creating several single- to multi-hair grafts and then implants it in the affected area of your scalp. Let’s say you’re redoing your lawn for spring. If you pulled up a sheet of sod from your backyard and moved it to your front yard to line the walkway, that’s like FUT. If you plucked blades of glass individually and arranged them carefully to fill in gaps in the front yard, that’s more like FUE. Here are some benefits of blending these two methods into one hybrid hair procedure:

FUE & FUT Hair Transplant Comparison
FUT (left) combined with FUE (right)
  • FUT leaves a linear scar on the back of your head, but FUE doesn’t. Combining them can limit scarring.
  • You can maximize the number of grafts transplanted in one appointment. If you have a lot of area to cover, combining these treatments can give you a fuller, thicker head of hair without too many visits.
  • With FUE, your doctor has more control over where they place each graft. FUT and FUE together can give you a more precise result than FUT can alone.

Combining FUE With Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)

Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is a type of non-surgical hair loss therapy where a doctor induces collagen production using microneedles and serums on the scalp. This can stimulate hair growth by triggering your body’s natural healing mechanisms to break down calcification and fibrosis. This improves tissue oxygenation and nutrient flow, allowing your hair follicles to grow naturally.

You might be wondering how effective CIT is. While it might seem like magic, it’s actually based on scientific evidence. It also dramatically improves blood flow to the hair follicles, slowing down hair loss. CIT can be especially helpful if you have a condition like androgenetic alopecia that causes hair loss. You’d typically receive treatment every four to six weeks until you have gone through treatment three to four times. Then, you can come back a few times a year for maintenance.

You can use FUE in combination with CIT to supplement the hair growth with transferred hair grafts. We’re happy to help you restore your hair’s growth with FUE or FUT, but we know there’s nothing like the real thing. If you want to help your hair follicles re-grow naturally before committing to a full restoration treatment, you may be a candidate for a hybrid treatment using hair growth factors and CIT.

Combining FUE With SMP

Scalp micro-pigmentation (SMP) is a treatment where micro deposits of 3D ink are deposited into your scalp in thinning areas, making your scalp look fuller and darker. Expert technicians apply pigment in the strength, shade, and shape needed to create the appearance of thicker hair. This technique can be ideal for supplementing FUE, especially if your hair is thinning but not fully balding.

Using SMP in conjunction with FUE is a great solution for patients who want the best possible results without undergoing several procedures. FUE helps cover the balding with new hair placement, but if you don’t have enough hair in the donor area to thicken up your hair as much as you’d like, SMP can help create the illusion. If you plan to pursue a hybrid procedure using both FUE and SMP, you’ll probably want to get FUE procedure done first. That way, our staff can take a look at your results once they’re fully healed and make a plan to fill in the spots that need it.

SMP is also a great way to hide scarring on the scalp. While the scars from FUE are nearly invisible, some people may be over harvested by less experienced clinicians, creating a moth-eaten appearance. Linear scars are left behind by FUT as well and depending on your hairstyle, may or may not be visible. Others may naturally have spacious donor areas. In any case, SMP is a great solution to blend these unsightly issues.

Combining Microneedling & Other Non-Surgical Options

If your hair follicles aren’t growing, they might just need a little encouragement. You might consider pairing microneedling with various growth factors and alternative procedures that target different issues within the dermal papilla and scalp. Microneedling is a non-surgical treatment where your doctor stamps a motorized device over your scalp, inserting a series of tiny needles into different layers of the tissue. While it might sound counteractive, creating these micro wound channels actually aids in healing hair follicles and encouraging hair growth. It also improves topical absorbency, making various growth factors and medications significantly more effective.

If needles make you a little nervous, don’t worry. Microneedling for the scalp includes local anesthesia, so you won’t feel the treatment. Plus, the needles can be as small as one millimeter wide, and the treatment usually is done in less than an hour.

You may also combine FUE with microneedling so you don’t need to transplant as many hair grafts, allowing you to save more donor hair for the future.

Microneedling can cause complications in some patients, so be sure to tell your doctor about any other conditions you might have before deciding on the treatment. Your hair is one-of-a-kind, so maybe your hair loss treatment should be too. Hybrid hair procedures are adaptable and functional, so you can meet your goals while sticking to your budget and timeline. You shouldn’t have to deal with hair loss alone, either. Our expert team at MAXIM Hair Restoration can work with you to create a customized hair plan that meets your needs. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FUE HAIR TRANSPLANTS?

You’re living in a modern world. Why should your hair restoration procedure be outdated? Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant procedure that uses state-of-the-art technology to recreate your natural hair, thicker and healthier than before. If you’ve considered other methods but decided against them, FUE might be the solution for you. Maybe you don’t want a big linear scar on your scalp. Maybe you can’t take too much time off of work. Or maybe you just want the most precise results possible. While we offer plenty of solutions to hair loss, here are some of the reasons you might choose FUE.

FUE Hair Transplants Leave Minimal Scarring

Many wonder what their head will look like after a restoration procedure. Maybe you like keeping your hair short, and you’re worried you’ll be left with a head full of noticeable scars. We have good news. FUE procedures don’t cause linear scarring. During the procedure, our hair transplant doctor or clinician uses a small instrument to harvest and transfer individual hairs, one at a time. There are no scalpels or stitches. The result is a series of tiny, circular scars that are barely visible to the eye. Most people won’t even know you had the surgery.

Scarring can vary between patients, but you can count on more natural-looking results than most other treatments. You don’t have to stock up on hats or grow your hair out to cover any marks. FUE gives you the freedom to wear your hair however you’d like, and isn’t that why you chose hair restoration in the first place?

It’s Nearly Painless

No one wants to sit through a painful, invasive procedure. Fortunately, FUE is virtually pain-free. If you’re intimidated by the FUT process, FUE offers a more comfortable alternative. FUE typically takes six to eight hours, so we make sure your experience is as relaxing and comfortable as it can be. The doctor or clinician will give you local anesthesia, so you won’t feel a thing during your procedure. We even encourage patients to take a nap, watch a movie, read, or chat with our friendly staff during the service.

FUE patients also experience less discomfort after their surgery. Recovery is typically much faster than other hair restoration procedures, and post-surgical complications are rare. You can expect to be back on your feet the next day and back to work in a couple of days, depending upon your profession. You probably shouldn’t engage in high-impact activities like contact sports for a few weeks after your FUE transplant, but once you’re healed, toss a football to celebrate.

FUE Is Cost-Effective

Hair restoration doesn’t need to cost a fortune, and FUE can be an affordable option. Pricing depends on how many grafts we extract and implant, so costs can be flexible. FUE relies on modern technology that allows us to harvest up to 4,000 grafts in a single session, which means you can maximize your results and minimize your visits.

Plus, we know that taking time off from your responsibilities isn’t always easy. Because of the minimal recovery time needed for FUE, you can get back to work sooner. With FUE, you can expect fewer lost wages, minimal follow-up visits, and less expensive maintenance. Schedule a free consultation with one of our experts to learn what your FUE procedure might cost.

FUE Produces Reliable Results

Hair restoration is an investment, and you want results you can count on. FUE offers patients fuller, more natural-looking results. Plus, your hair grows back healthier than it might with other, more invasive methods that cause trauma to the scalp. Our skilled professionals place each graft carefully to cover your hair loss, and we can even mirror your natural hairline to preserve the look of your hair. You won’t look like you’ve had a hair restoration procedure. No linear scar in the donor area to reveal your secret. You’ll just look like you. By choosing FUE, you’re setting yourself up for long-term success.

FUT, which harvests strips of hair follicles, isn’t as minimally invasive as FUE. However, an FUT procedure results in higher density and a larger session. Imagine you’re planting seeds, hoping to see beautiful hydrangeas grow in your backyard. You’d try to plant your seeds in optimal conditions, so they grow back healthy every year. We treat your hair with the same care, so you can enjoy a thick head of hair for years to come.

FUE Hair Restoration Uses Advanced Technology

Say you’re picking out a new car. The dealership shows you a decades-old model with an old cassette player and not much else, then they show you a brand new car with all the latest technology. The decision’s probably pretty easy. When we perform FUE procedures, we use devices like the S.A.F.E. FUE System, the ATERA system, the Ellis FUE System, the WAW FUE System, and the Cole FUE System, all of which allow us to offer the least invasive treatment possible. We also have access to robotic technology to automate the process, ensuring fast, reliable results. However, each technology has its pros and cons. Therefore, we have multiple technologies are our disposal unlike most clinics which offer a one size fits all solution.

Our state-of-the-art tools also help us analyze your hair loss. Our technology scans your scalp, identifies the areas where you need care the most, and helps us make precise selections. We aren’t just harvesting and transferring hair grafts randomly. We’re using science, technology, and digital imaging to place each graft exactly where it should go. This leads to a thicker, more natural head of hair that will grow back consistently year after year.

Most importantly, an FUE Hair Transplant will not make a hole in your pocket at MAXIM. Our prices are competitive and we offer 0% financing via multiple patient finance companies.

Your FUE hair transplant procedure is a step towards a more confident, joyful life. Some people gain confidence, others self-esteem, some advance their careers, and others are able to find that special someone. We want that new life to start the second you sit down in one of our chairs, and we want it to last for years to come. These minimally invasive hair restoration procedures give you the best results for a fraction of the time. You’ll be back to regular life in no time, with no lasting signs of treatment. If you want to learn more about FUE and our other services, schedule your free consultation with MAXIM Hair Restoration today.

FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION (FUT): AN IN-DEPTH LOOK

Everyone experiences daily hair loss, but with hundreds of thousands of hairs on your head, most people don’t notice when a few thousand go missing, and they grow back to replenish the loss. When you start to see a clump of hair in the drain or a bunch stuck in your brush, your hair loss might be more severe and require treatment. The professionals at MAXIM Hair Restoration offer a variety of non-surgical and surgical hair transplant procedures to treat hair loss. One of these procedures is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), also known as the Strip Method.

A Brief History of Hair Transplantation

Man Combing Hair - In Dept Look at FUT Hair Transplants

Dr. Norman Orentreich, a New York University (NYU) dermatologist, performed the first hair transplant in the U.S. in 1952. Hair transplantation consisted of taking large punch grafts, harvested from the back of the patient’s scalp, known as the donor area, and then transplanting those hairs to the thinning and balding areas where the patient was experiencing hair loss. This technique took dozens of circular hair tufts and plucked them down onto the hairline, giving an unnatural appearance.

Today’s methods for hair transplantation began in the early 1990s with Dr. Bobby Limmer being the first to perform Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Another modern technique was also developed after that, known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) which was similar to Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Both now offer much more natural-looking results with the FUE method transplanting the grafts without a linear scar and without using sutures.

What Is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a type of hair transplant that uses a strip method. It’s a widely-used procedure with excellent retention and regrowth rates among patients, enabling hair transplant surgeons to perform MEGA Sessions upto 4,000 grafts. The density and survival rate of grafts with FUT is higher compared to FUE. At MAXIM Hair Restoration, a hair transplant doctor will remove a strip of hair from the patient’s donor site, usually located at the back of the head where hair is more full.

Next, the strip of hair is dissected into individual hair grafts, each consisting of one to three hair follicles. These are known as micro grafts. When hair transplants originated, each graft consisted of five to 10 hair follicles known as plugs. Micro grafts allow for a more natural appearance of the hair and are far less obvious than plugs once were.

Finally, the hair transplant physician transplants the hair grafts to the area on the head where you’re experiencing baldness or thinning. The typical duration of a FUT procedure is about six hours and it is performed in an outpatient clinical setting. The client will receive local anesthesia, allowing them to take a nap, converse on the phone, or watch TV during the procedure. The team at MAXIM Hair Restoration can perform MEGA hair transplant sessions, where up to 4,000 grafts are transplanted at a time.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a proven surgical hair restoration technique that produces a higher yield, more grafts, and a higher survival rate than other methods.  You can also expect to experience a denser result with FUT, restoring not only your hair but also your confidence.

What Are the Benefits of FUT?

The most significant benefit is the density at which the hair is restored and regrown using the FUT method. Harvesting an extended strip from the donor area provides thousands of individual hair grafts, which is more than any other hair restoration technique can do, allowing thousands to be transplanted in a single surgery. For patients experiencing significant hair loss, the ability to transplant thousands of grafts in one sitting can be very advantageous.

Who Is a Good Candidate for FUT?

Several factors will be considered when determining whether or not you’re a good candidate for Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Most candidates experience significant hair loss, making the possibility of transplanting 3,000 or more grafts in a single procedure appealing. Factors to be considered include:

  • Age. Patients between ages 25 and 65 are best suited for FUT. Hair loss in younger patients is less predictable, while older patients may have health concerns such as high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety and other issues.
  • Gender. FUT is a viable option for males and females experiencing hair loss. Although commonly referred to as male pattern baldness, this type of hair loss can affect either gender.
  • Hair loss pattern. FUT is best suited for hair loss that’s concentrated in specific areas on your head, including male pattern baldness, which leaves a horseshoe-shaped pattern of thinning or receding hair along the hairline.
  • Hairstyle. FUT is best for patients who wear their hair a little longer in the back to conceal the linear scar from the strip removal. If the patient wears a buzzed hairstyle, you risk having a visible scar.
  • Hair color. If your hair color is similar to your skin tone, you’ll have less color contrast, making you a good candidate.

If you’re considering hair transplantation and would like to know if FUT is an option for you, contact the team at MAXIM Hair Restoration. You’ll receive a free consultation where our professionals will discuss all of our hair restoration methods, the advantages and disadvantages, and whether or not you’re a good candidate for each procedure. We’re here to help you get back the hair and confidence you’ve been missing.

How Do You Prepare for a FUT Procedure?

Once you have been deemed a good candidate for FUT, you will undergo a pre-op evaluation to ensure that you’re in good health. Medical clearance may be required for patients over 65 years of age and those with health issues such as high blood pressure, anxiety, cardiac issues, and/or if they are on certain medications. It is highly recommended that you avoid alcohol, vitamin E, and aspirin for 48 hours prior to your procedure. Any of these may cause excessive bleeding during the FUT procedure. A good night’s sleep and rest are essential, and a light breakfast on the morning of your procedure is a good idea. Shower, wash, and dry your hair thoroughly and avoid adding any hair products to your hair, particularly synthetic and fragrant ones that may cause an allergic reaction.

How Many Visits Does a FUT Procedure Require?

At MAXIM Hair Restoration, you typically come in first for a complimentary consultation to determine if FUT or FUE is the best hair transplant option for you. If you and the hair doctor mutually decide on the FUT method, our staff or doctor will go over any pre-op instructions at the same visit. You will then come back the day of your procedure and again for a post-op visit seven to 10 days after your FUT procedure.

We often invite patients back for a six- to 12-month visit as well to evaluate the outcome of your procedure. If, at any time, during your time with MAXIM, you experience any side effects or reactions or concerns, reach out to us immediately.

Are There Any Side Effects to FUT Hair Transplants?

FUT complications are rare, with less than 1% of patients developing any type of infection, side effects, or complications after the surgery. The ample blood supply to the head speeds the healing process, making FUT a reasonably fast-healing procedure. Potential complications include the following, the vast majority of which are temporary and resolve over time:

  • Unnatural-looking hair.
  • Scarring or bumps.
  • Folliculitis, or the inflammation of hair follicles.
  • Swelling.
  • Bleeding.
  • Pain.
  • Cysts.
  • Numbness.

If you experience any of these side effects after your FUT procedure, reach out to the hair restoration specialist that performed your FUT for further instructions.

How Much Does FUT Cost?

On average, a follicular unit transplantation procedure costs between $6,000 and $10,000+, although prices among clinics will vary. Factors that determine the cost of your procedure include:

  • Amount of hair. Some clinics offer FUT at a fixed price, while others charge by the number of grafts. Remember that each graft consists of 1 to 3 hair follicles. In that case, the more hair you need to have transplanted, the higher the cost.
  • Surgeon. The surgeon’s experience may increase the price of your FUT procedure, but it also gives you the added benefit of all that experience.
  • Who is Performing the Procedure? Clinics where the hair transplant doctor is fully involved in the procedure will charge more as it also ensures an improved and higher quality clinical outcome and result.
  • Location. Which city the clinic is located in may affect the price of your FUT procedure. It might be worth it to research cities that you tend to visit or live in and those you’d be willing to travel to for FUT to determine which is the best price. Note that most medical tourism destinations do not offer FUT since it requires post-op recovery and care.
  • Travel costs. Travel expenses should be considered if your procedure requires you to travel.

Typically, insurance doesn’t cover hair transplantation procedures, including FUT, because it’s considered a cosmetic procedure. If your hair loss is due to trauma or burns, you might be able to get your insurance to cover it.
