How Many Hair Grafts Do I Need?

Hair transplant surgery has come a long way since the technology’s first development. The specialists at MAXIM Hair Restoration are each trained in the most advanced hair transplant technologies and procedures. We offer two of these specialized procedures, follicular unit transplantation and follicular unit extraction. How many grafts you’ll need depends on the area needing to be covered and the donor area available. Our specialists can develop a plan to provide you with the best treatment options for your specific circumstance. How Many Hair Grafts Will I Need?

The amount of grafts required for your hair transplant depends on the look you’re after, the quality of your donor area, the stage and location of your progression, and the variants in hair thickness and hair groupings. For those experiencing slight hair loss around the hairline or temporal peaks, you can typically expect to donate up to 1,500 grafts with additional units required the deeper the recession. If this loss then moves into the mid-scalp, you could end up adding another 1,000-2,000 grafts. In other words, everything is relevant to you and your specific situation. One man’s crown may require 1000 grafts while yours may require 2,000. So don’t speculate, see an expert and get their mathematical reasoning for the requirements of your scalp.

It goes without saying, the larger the area, the larger the graft requirement. Luckily, MAXIM Hair Restoration can do up to 4,000 grafts at a time. This ability makes it easy for our patients to get the hair and results they want in one visit, assuming they have a capable donor. While we can’t say here whether 2,000 hair grafts will be sufficient for your degree of hair loss, we can provide you with accurate estimations during your consultation.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular unit transplantation, or FUT, is a hair restoration surgery option that enables the specialists at MAXIM Hair Restoration to provide you with dense, natural, permanent results. This procedure is performed by taking a strip of tissue and hair from a donor area, typically located at the back of the head. This strip of hair is dissected into smaller, individual hair grafts and then transplanted to the areas you’ve experienced hair loss. Each of these grafts contains one to three hair follicles or micro-grafts.

During a FUT session, we’re easily able to transplant thousands of grafts in a single session. FUT is ideal for those patients who have severe hair loss and are aiming for the most density out of one procedure. This procedure can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, which is performed in our clinic utilizing local anesthesia. During the procedure, you’ll remain awake and can read a book, listen to music, or otherwise relax.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction, or FUE, is performed using advanced medical technology, including the Ellis System, S.A.F.E. FUE system, the Cole FUE System, the Atera System, WAW, NEOGRAFT, or ARTAS Robots. One follicular unit is dissected at a time, as opposed to a strip, and taken out in with spacing that blends the missing hair with your existing hair. This allows you to wear your hair shaved on the sides, unlike an FUT, where a linear scar remains slightly visible. Just like an FUT, this procedure is performed using Local anesthesia, and you can comfortably sit and watch a movie or even have a solid nap during your procedure.

After follicular unit extraction, you’ll have a rapid recovery time and be able to return to work quickly. There’s generally minimal discomfort or pain and no linear scarring or stitching. Our physicians will be able to transfer 2,000 grafts or more during a single session. FUE and FUT prices are comparable, and determining which is right for you depends on how you wear your hair and what your needs are.

Do I Qualify for Hair Restoration?

Anyone who is experiencing hair loss may qualify for the services offered at MAXIM Hair Restoration. At your consultation, we’ll recommend a treatment plan based on your age, expectations, and the degree of hair loss. For the most part, eligibility criteria are inclusive enough that most people, around 80%, are candidates for our services. You may be a good candidate for treatment if:

  • You are feeling unhappy, or your hair is holding you back from your full potential.
  • Your hair is affecting your mental wellbeing.
  • You’re experiencing a receding hairline, premature baldness, or hair thinning.
  • You have a sufficient amount of hair in the areas to be used as donor sites. These sites include the sides or back of the head.
  • You have realistic results about what hair transplant surgery can do for you.
  • You have a thorough understanding of the commitment that hair transplant surgery will take and understand that you’ll have to follow strict post-care instructions for success.

Potential Hair Transplant Surgery Side Effects

Hair transplant surgery is generally well-tolerated, but there are a few side effects you should be aware of if you’re considering visiting MAXIM Hair Restoration for treatment. You may experience minor bruising, pain, and swelling, but you may also experience:

  • Itching at the donor and transplant areas.
  • Tightness in the area that the procedure is performed.
  • Scabbing at the area treated.
  • Temporary loss of feeling in the treated area.

Convenient Payment Options

Hair loss is unforgiving and progressive, so getting ahead of the loss is critical for long term success in treating and combating your hair loss. Hair restoration is not typically covered by health insurance, meaning that the cost will need to be paid out of pocket. During your consultation, you’ll receive a quote on how much your treatment will cost. MAXIM Hair Restoration provides our patients with several convenient payment options, including 0% financing.
