WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN UNDERGOING A FOLLICULAR UNIT HAIR TRANSPLANT (FUT)

If you’re looking for long-term hair transplant results in California, Orange County? There are two procedures which you should be focusing on. These hair transplant procedures are known as follicular unit extraction (FUE), and follicular unit transplant (FUT).

Both types of transplants have their benefits, and their shortcomings as well. Perhaps you’re leaning toward undergoing a follicular unit transplant (FUT)? Maybe you’re looking to obtain some more information on the procedure?

If so, you’re in the right place. Here is what you can expect when undergoing a follicular unit transplant (FUT) in Newport Beach, California.

The Benefits of Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)

There are quite a few benefits associated with the follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure. These benefits present themselves in the realms of the physical, the practical, the cosmetic, and the financial. There is NO linear scar at the back of the head, the discomfort is minimal, and recovery is quicker.

Compared to follicular unit extractions (FUE), follicular unit transplants (FUT) are a much more affordable solution. The reason for this? They require fewer grafting sessions than are required with follicular unit extractions.

In addition to this, they are often known to produce a higher yield (no. of surviving grafts) than you will get with follicular unit extractions. This is due to a lower transection rate with FUT.

The Downsides

While follicular unit hair transplants (FUT) are advantageous in a number of ways, they are not without their downsides. For most individuals, however, these downsides are not a major cause for concern.

Perhaps the biggest downside associated with these procedures is that they will leave a slight linear scar on your head which is sometimes noticeable through your hair if you shave too close to the scalp. Though this scar is not blatant, it can be a deal breaker for some individuals.

Arguably the only other downside associated with FUT is that it can cause some minor discomfort after it is performed. However, this discomfort will typically disappear within a day or two.

The Process of Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)

Before you decide to undergo a follicular unit hair transplant (FUT), you’d probably like to understand what the process actually entails. Let’s review the process below.

This procedure typically includes several grafting sessions, each of which will yield between 1,000 and 3,000 grafts in total. Generally, you won’t have to undergo any more than a total of 2 or 3 grafting sessions.

When you go in for a session, your hair transplant surgeon will put you under the effect of a local anesthesia. This will numb any pain you might feel, while allow you to stay awake during the procedure. After your pain has been numbed, your surgeon will take hair from large donor areas on the sides of your head. Then, he or she, along with the team, will transplant that hair to your head’s balding areas.

After the hair has been transplanted, it will be expected to fall out within a few weeks. Around four months later, it will grow back permanently, growing in by around six months with higher density in about a year.

The Recovery

The recovery associated with a follicular unit transplant (FUT) is very mild. While you might experience some minor discomfort, this discomfort will typically subside within 48 hours. To make your recovery a little more comfortable, you may choose to apply ice to the areas which have been affected.

After two or three days, you can generally go back to living your everyday life. Not only can you go to work or school within a few days.

THE BENEFITS OF SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION!

Looking for an ideal solution to thinning hair, pattern baldness, alopecia, and irregular hair loss? Then you might want to consider scalp micropigmentation, which is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide as an affordable alternative to hair transplants.

micropigmentation

Micropigmentation is a non-invasive hair loss procedure that uses micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp, replicating hair follicles and restoring thinning hair to resemble its previous density.

Micropigmentation offers numerous benefits, including:

scalp micropigmentation

It doesn’t require surgery.

No surgical incisions are necessary, which means there’s no scarring and no risk of infection.

It’s safe.

Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is performed under strict sterile conditions by specially-trained and certified hair restoration experts at MAXiM.

It’s painless.

A local anesthetic is used to numb the scalp during the procedure, so you won’t feel a thing.

It’s a faster procedure.

The whole process is completed in just a couple of sessions. That amounts to only a few hours. Also, because micropigmentation is non-invasive, healing time is limited to only a few days. In fact, most people who choose this procedure are back to work within two days. There are no dressings to change, or stitches to be concerned with. All that is needed is thorough cleaning in the following weeks.

It’s affordable and cost-effective.

Scalp micropigmentation is only a fraction of the cost when compared to hair transplants. And because it’s a permanent solution to hair loss, there is no need to waste money on ineffective tonics or shampoos. Neither do you need to spend a penny on post-procedural medications or care products.

It looks more natural.

Unlike scalp tattooing, which uses regular ink, scalp micropigmentation uses advanced medical grade pigment for a more natural look. The pigments are matched to both existing hair color, as well as skin tone, for the most realistic look achievable.

It requires minimal maintenance.

Right after the procedure, you can return to your daily activities. Plus, because there is no real hair, there is no need for expensive hair products, nor is there extra time wasted on styling.

It’s longer lasting.

Scalp micropigmentation provides a long-term solution for hair loss. The results – including color and strength – should last four to eight years at which point, you can undergo an enhancement procedure to restore any fading.

It hides imperfections.

If you have scars from a past injury or hair transplant, micropigmentation creates a bit of camouflage for these imperfections. It can also help to mask a receding hairline, making hair appear fuller.

At MAXiM scalp micropigmentation can be fully customized to your individual needs, and your scalp and hair color. You can get the desired density and look, giving you the appearance of a full hair line. Plus, you’ll recognize immediate results following the first of two treatments.

Let’s discuss the process of undergoing an eyebrow transplant in Wilmette, Illinois.

As human beings, we can experience hair loss on different parts of our bodies. One of the more common hair loss spots is the eyebrow. Regardless of how eyebrow loss comes to be, it’s almost always psychologically devastating, substantially reducing the affected person’s overall confidence level.

Fortunately, eyebrow loss doesn’t have to be permanent. There are now surgical procedures available which can return your eyebrows to their former glory. Look for Eyebrow Transplant in Wilmette, Illinois.

What are the Reasons for Eyebrow Loss?

Eyebrow loss comes about for a number of different reasons. These reasons run the gamut from the hereditary, to the medical, to the physical, and more. Let’s discuss a few of the more common reasons for eyebrow loss below.

Over-plucking

With women, in particular, eyebrow plucking is very popular. When done in moderation, eyebrow plucking can be perfectly safe. However, when done to excess, it can result in permanent eyebrow loss.

Subconscious Tearing

Some individuals suffer from psychological conditions which cause them to tear out their hair. Unfortunately, the more that this hair is torn out, the harder time it has growing back in. At some point, these individuals could tear out their eyebrows to the point that the hair will never grow back.

Genetic Inheritance

In some cases, genetics can play a major role in eyebrow loss. Unfortunately, individuals who are genetically predisposed to eyebrow loss don’t have much of a choice when it comes to prevention. The only way for them to obtain thick eyebrows is by undergoing a transplant.

Accidental Trauma

Some people lose the hair in their eyebrows because they end up in physically traumatic accidents. Auto accidents, sports injuries, and fire-related accidents can cause your eyebrow hair to permanently fall out.

Diseases

There are also diseases that can cause permanent eyebrow loss. These diseases include alopecia, hypothyroidism, atopic dermatitis, and many others. While some of these diseases can be accommodated by an eyebrow transplant, others cannot.

How is an Eyebrow Transplant Carried Out in Wilmette, Illinois?

Before undergoing an eyebrow transplant, you would probably like to understand what it entails. Let’s now discuss the process involved with undergoing such a transplant.

Typically, when undergoing an eyebrow transplant, you will undergo a follicular unit extraction, or FUE. This is a procedure in which grafts are taken from small donor hair areas at the back and/or sides of the head and transplanted to balding areas.

When used for eyebrow transplants, this procedure is fairly swift. Typically, it won’t take any more than a few hours to complete. If eyebrow transplants has been completed, your transplanted hair will fall out, only to grow back permanently six or so months later.

After the Transplant

After an eyebrow transplant has been completed, most individuals are able to recover fairly quickly. Typically, it won’t take any more than a couple of days in order for the discomfort to subside. During this brief span, it might be a good idea to apply ice to the transplanted area in order to quell inflammation.

Following the recovery period, you are free to do whatever you want to do. This includes exercise, work, school, and everything else which is a part of your daily life.

YOUR TOP QUESTIONS ABOUT HAIR TRANSPLANT ANSWERED

Are you wondering about any unanswered questions regarding hair transplants? According to the American Hair Loss Association, 35 million men around the world experience baldness, and in the United States alone, 40% of patients experiencing hair loss are women. For many, hair transplant surgery has become the choice to overcome hair loss. It is an effective method that provides natural results and involves a simple procedure. It has practically no downtime and it is very safe.

Having questions about hair transplants, meaning transplanting hair from one part of the scalp to the area where the hair is missing isn’t new. Many people are curious about the procedure and want to get familiar with all the details. It is becoming an increasingly safe and effective method for dealing with hair loss. Plus, it is being performed globally which makes it even more of a trustworthy procedure. Let’s begin with some history about hair restoration surgery.

What is the History of Hair Replacement Surgery?

Hair transplantation first appeared in Germany in the mid-1800s. Modern hair transplant surgery has come a very long way since its introduction to the United States in the 1950s. The very first hair replacement surgery was done in New York City by Dr. Norman Orentreich. This occurred after many obstacles and opposition by the medical community, which did not agree with the initial submissions of his paper. It became a landmark study that was published in 1959.

Dr. Orentreich coined the term “donor dominance” to expand on the basic concept of hair transplantation. It explained that transplanted hair continues to show the same characteristics of the hair from where it came from. To explain another way, hair that was taken from the rear or side of the head, which is also known as the permanent zone, would continue to grow the same way as when it was in its original place.

The study concludes that donor dominance shows the reason why hair located in the donor area, which does not experience hair loss, continues to grow after following the transplantation to the bald regions of the scalp.

Modern techniques, coupled with the science supporting transplant development, are providing a more natural look and feel for hair transplant recipients. It has become a common method for dealing with hair loss for both men and women. Not only for hair on the scalp but even for eyebrows, beard and mustache hair transplants.

Today, a hair transplant is a natural choice for those seeking to regain a more youthful, healthy look. For those who can only think “toupee” “hair pieces” or “hair plugs,” think again. Hair restoration is an innovative technique that has proved to be the most effective in regaining hair as you once had it.

The following are some questions about hair transplant and their answers.

What is hair transplant surgery?

A hair transplant is a minor surgical procedure that involves removing hair from an area of the head that has ample hair – usually the sides or back of the scalp – and then placing those hair follicles in the thinning and balding areas where more hair is desired. Over time, the hair follicles take root and grow, filling in the areas of the scalp that have lost hair. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes several hours. It involves a fairly easy recovery and very little downtime. Patients do not experience tremendous pain and most don’t have any complications. The result is natural hair in areas where hair had been lost.

Can women go bald like men?

Men and women are both affected by baldness or thinning hair. Men are more genetically prone to baldness, though ironically, baldness is passed down through one’s genes. Both men and women can lose their hair and even go bald, but unlike men, balding for a woman is primarily related to hormones. Women lose hair due to hormonal changes, and they seldom go totally bald, but only experience thinning. Alopecia areata is an auto-immune disease that attacks the hair follicles, causing hair loss. While rare, it can cause baldness in both men and women. Some women experience temporary hair loss after pregnancy. This, however, is a temporary state that usually goes back to normal after their hormones regain balance. Another reason why some women may experience hair loss is due to extreme hairstyles that pull on the hair and eventually cause the hair follicle to get damaged.

What type of patient most often gets hair transplant surgery?

Statistics gathered from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery indicate that a little more than 84% of balding men are or at have some point considered hair transplant surgery.

In comparison, women who choose hair replacement surgery to deal with hair loss come in at 15.3 percent. The greatest number of men who are deciding to take advantage of hair transplant surgery are between the ages of 30 and 39 years old although this has expanded to the 25 to 55 year age group with an increasing number of younger and older men seeking hair transplants. Women who are choosing the surgery most often are between the ages of 39 and 49 years old.

What does the procedure entail?

Hair transplant surgery is rather straightforward and quick. It is performed in a doctor’s office or clinic setting, and for most patients, the surgery lasts several hours. Each client is different as far as the extent of their hair loss, and their viable donor site. Depending on the number of grafts to be transplanted, more than one hair restoration procedure may be required. Your doctor or clinician will give you a timeline and detailed plan during the initial consultation. The hair restoration surgery might be conducted under local anesthetic, which is perfectly normal and it is the most common way it is performed. However, some patients may be completely anesthetized, meaning under general anesthesia so that they will sleep through the procedure. This is usually the case for patients who might be very nervous or may have other special needs. Commonly, it is an outpatient surgery and the person will be able to go home afterward. It is strictly advisable not to drive immediately following the procedure.

After the procedure, the patient will be given an antibiotic ointment for them to apply after washing the area. It is important that the patient follows aftercare instructions to make sure the procedure is effective and doesn’t have any complications. The aftercare is simple, you are responsible for ensuring that the area stays clean, free from crusty build-ups and that you watch for signs of infection such as inflammation, redness, or pain. There is practically no downtime after the procedure, some people return to work within a couple of days and don’t notice a difference in the way they feel, which is a very positive result.

Is Hair Transplant Surgery safe?

Hair transplant surgery is considered a safe procedure, however, as with any surgery, there can be risks. To minimize those risks and potential complications, a patient should have a conversation with their healthcare professional. Speak with the hair transplant surgeon concerning the risks that are involved and be sure to cover the issues that are particular to your case. Each person is different, so it is important that you find out what applies to you. Be sure to provide a list of medications, both over-the-counter and prescribed that you’re taking as well as supplements. Additionally, your hair transplant doctor/clinician will take a detailed health history to find out if you’re fit for surgery.

Is the hair transplant procedure affordable?

If your reasons for choosing hair transplant surgery are purely cosmetic, then most insurance companies won’t pay for it. If the surgery is due to an accident or injury, then the insurance company might underwrite the surgery but it would need to be pre-approved. You will have to take into consideration the cost of other solutions that you might implement to restore, control or camouflage your hair loss. People have to take into account all the products, wigs, hair systems, and other methods that they have used for years and examine the costs associated with those products. It is all relative, some people think is well worth having natural hair and being able to feel their best. Overall, the price of the procedure is competitive with other procedures as you would normally find in the healthcare industry.

Does it really work?

Transplanted hair falls out within a few weeks of the procedure which can be alarming to the patient; but the fallout is normal. New hair will grow in its place within as little as four months. It takes six to twelve months to see meaningful results. It is part of the normal hair cycle where it sheds and grows back again. In conclusion, yes, hair restoration surgery is very effective.

FUE vs FUT Hair Transplant: The Pros and Cons of each

FUE vs FUT, what is better hair transplant for your hair loss, The FUT procedure allows for the physician to do many more grafts at a single time. The FUE procedure is more time consuming for harvesting follicles.

When it comes to hair restoration techniques, there are two procedures which reign supreme. These procedures are the hair transplants known as follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplant (FUT).

FUE vs FUT Hair Transplant

Perhaps you’re thinking about undergoing one of these two procedures, but aren’t sure of which one to choose? If so, you’re in the right place. We’re going to compare the pros and cons of both so that you can make an informed decision.

FUE: Pros

fue

Very Little Scarring

Because FUE involves taking only small hair samples, it results in very little linear scarring. In most cases, any linear scarring which does exist after the procedure will be completely covered by hair. This differs from FUT, which generally leaves a faint linear scar at the back of the head.

Very Little Discomfort

While neither FUE or FUT result in any remarkable amount of discomfort, FUE typically results in less discomfort than does FUT. This is because FUT involves taking a strip from the back of the head whereas in FUE, the surgeon extracts one graft at a time.

Limited Recovery

In the vast majority of cases, FUE patients can go back to living their everyday lives almost as soon as their grafting sessions have ended. While patients might experience some slight discomfort, this discomfort shouldn’t keep them off schedule for any more than a day or two.

FUE: Cons

Relatively Expensive

Because FUE takes longer and requires more hair transplant sessions than does FUT, it’s generally more expensive than FUT.

Fairly Time-Consuming

Because FUE requires a number of different grafting sessions in order to be carried out appropriately, it can be fairly time-consuming. However, after a single session has ended, you’re essentially free to do whatever you’d like to do.

FUT: Pros

Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)

Relatively Inexpensive

Because FUT does not necessitate as many hair grafting sessions as FUE, it is typically less expensive. Whereas FUE usually allows for up to 2,000 to 2,500 grafts per session, FUT usually allows for around 3,000 grafts per session up to 4,000.

Takes Very Little Time

Again, because FUT allows for more grafts per session than does FUE, fewer sessions are required. The result of this? It takes a lot less time to be carried out than it does for FUE.

Fast Recovery

Typically, after one of your FUT sessions has ended, you will be fully recovered within a couple of days. After these days have passed, you are free to go to work, school, and do everything else that you would normally do.

FUT: Cons

Produces a Semi-noticeable Scar

One of the cons of FUT is that it will produce a linear scar which can sometimes be noticeable through hair, particularly if the head is closely shaved. This differs from FUE, which produces only small scars that are much more difficult to see through hair.

Includes Some Potential Discomfort

While FUT is a very mild and minor surgical procedure, there is a chance that it could produce some slight discomfort. However, this discomfort is typically very easy to deal with, and it will likely subside within a few days of the procedure being carried out.

Is a Hair Transplant Permanent?

Hair transplant is recognized as the most effective option for restoring lost hair, is this permanent? Nevertheless, clients considering a hair transplant always ask the same important question: Will it last, or will I inevitably lose the hair I’m replacing?

The good news is yes – a hair transplant is permanent, and here’s why …

An Ample Supply

permanent hair transplantMost people have permanent hair in ample supply – even people who experience severe hair loss. That’s because hair is usually found in the back of the head, where we don’t see it and it doesn’t make an impact on our appearance. During a hair transplant, those healthy hair follicles are taken from one location and moved to the area where your hair is thinning, or where your scalp is bald.

Permanent Hair Transplant

Whether your hair restoration specialist uses the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method – in which each follicular unit is individually relocated – or the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method – in which a strip of tissue is removed and individual follicular units are transplanted – the procedure is carefully performed to match the patient’s hair growth pattern so that new hair will continue to grow in the targeted area.

A Painless, Permanent Procedure

A hair transplant is a relatively simple and painless outpatient procedure that can be done in less than one day. In fact, it’s not the procedure itself that is time-consuming, but making sure a natural-looking hairline is created using the correct hair textures and placement that matches the shape of your face and features.

shedding hair transplant maxim hair restoration

And grow they will because the transplanted hairs are resistant to the DHT hormone that causes hair loss in the first place – which means they won’t thin or fall out at a later date. In fact, it is the permanence of a hair transplant that makes it the best choice over temporary hair loss solutions. When performed by an experienced medical professional, a hair transplant will look perfectly natural because it is your own hair.

Temporary Shedding

Although you can experience some additional hair loss after a transplant, this shedding is to be expected and usually temporary. That’s because it is caused by a stress-related condition known as Telogen Effluvium (TE), which is triggered by trauma to the scalp during the hair restoration procedure. TE typically develops around three months following the transplant and is linked to the hair growth cycle, causing some a temporary halt to hair production. It’s a short-term effect, followed by a long-term resumption of healthy hair growth within about three months after the procedure.

Let’s face it. Toupees and hairpieces are passé, spray-on fibers will mask thinning hair until your next shower, and topical formulas may or may not prevent further hair loss until you stop using them – but a hair transplant is permanent.

permanent procedure in hair transplantWhatever is causing your hair loss, MAXiM Hair Restoration has plastic and hair transplant surgeons who every day artfully create an attractive hairline that is unique to each clients.  We have convenient locations throughout the United States in New York, Long Island, Connecticut, Chicago, Dallas, and the Washington, DC area, as well as several international locations.  Contact MAXiM today to find out if you are a candidate for a hair transplant.

What Is Non-Surgical Hair Restoration?

Perhaps thinning hair is genetic in your family, or maybe you had a full head of hair just a few years ago – but if you have thinning hair now, there is hope for hair growth with Non-surgical hair restoration. While there are medical advancements in the field of hair restoration that could restore your lush locks, take the time to try other options. Some experts recommend scalp exercises to stimulate your hair follicles and promote growth.

These exercises don’t require a physical therapist’s recommendation or even supervision or prescription from a doctor. Try these natural, holistic alternatives or Non-surgical hair restoration right in your own home to improve your scalp and hair health.

Scalp Relaxation

Although the word relaxation is in the title of this exercise, it’s truthfully not very relaxing. This method consists of using your interlocked palms, excluding thumbs, to move and stimulate the top layer of your scalp. Do not move your fingers. You can do these scalp movements for 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off, for a total of 10 repetitions.

Circular Massage

This is a more traditional method of a scalp massage. By massaging small sections of your scalp – not your hair – at a time, you can concentrate on stimulating your entire head. Make sure to alternate your movements between clockwise and counter-clockwise.  You can do this using your dry hands or by rubbing a little bit of vitamin E oil on your palms and fingers.

Inversion Method

The inversion method essentially takes the traditional circular massage and flips it on its head – literally. The inversion method requires you to bend over so that your scalp is lower than your heart. This position would allow more blood to rush to your head, allowing your follicles to be stimulated more easily. You would then repeat your clockwise and counter-clockwise circular massages in small sections.

Upside Down Washing

Instead of standing under the showerhead and letting the water rain down on you, try flipping your hair over your head and washing it in the sink.  You will be washing follicles that barely see the light day, and your scalp will thank you.  Try using a stimulating shampoo such as one that contains tea tree oil, then massage the shampoo into your hair using the fleshy parts of your fingertips.  Your hair will feel stimulated and amazing and may even look fuller after being washed upside down.

Using a Dermaroller

A dermaroller is a small handheld device that essentially causes micro-injuries to your skin. Using a dermaroller on your scalp may promote growth of your hair follicles by awakening your hair’s natural growth. Once your scalp is “injured” it will try to heal itself, activating the growth process.  Before using a dermaroller, be sure to consult an Aestheticians or your dermatologist; poking tiny holes into your skin may not be the best thing to do if you don’t know what you are doing.

Hair Loss: The Emotional Effects

For many people, hair loss is a natural and inevitable symptom of aging. But that doesn’t make it any easier to accept.  The loss of one’s once youthful lush locks can take an emotional, sometimes devastating, psychological and emotional toll.

That’s because practically every society in the world associates a full head of hair with being young, beautiful, virile and healthy. Consequently, the gradual loss or thinning of one’s hair can also lead to a loss of one’s self-esteem and even cause depression or anxiety.

For men, hair loss represents an embarrassing decline in perceived power and virility. Consciously or subconsciously, they feel they aren’t as manly or good-looking as they used to be – or worse, a potential object of ridicule. For women who pride themselves on their beautiful head of hair and equate it with beauty and sensuality, thinning hair can make them feel less desirable.

Of course, this mindset is purely cultural. It’s based on centuries of idolizing men and women – some real and some fictitious — with long, wholesome hair from – legendary figures like Samson and Lady Godiva to icons like Rita Hayworth, Farrah Fawcett, Jennifer Aniston, and the Beatles.

Naturally, there are positive ways to cope with the emotional effects of hair loss. For example, you can remind yourself that as unpleasant as it may be, hair loss is not the end of the world. It may challenge you, but it doesn’t define you.

Neither does hair loss have anything to do with your prowess or sexuality. With or without thinning hair, you’re still the same passionate and desirable person you were before your hair started to thin.

But if the emotional effects of hair loss prove too depressing to ignore, you may benefit by talking about your feelings with a close friend or mental health professional who can help you deal with the problem and find ways to cope.

Another solution is to take charge of the situation and contact the skilled hair restoration professionals at MAXiM Hair Restoration.  MAXiM Hair Restoration has plastic and hair transplant surgeons who artfully create an attractive hairline for people with hair loss every day.  We have convenient locations throughout the U.S. including New York, Long Island, Connecticut, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Newport Beach, and the Washington, DC area, as well as various international locations including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Manila, Philippines.
